Description
While one-third of the American population is overweight or obese, weight loss is a priority for many. While everyone will have a unique weight loss plan that gives them results, a balance between healthy eating habits and exercise is a good place to start. There is no magic cure to weight loss. Losing weight and keeping it off are a lifestyle.
Weight Loss – Weight Gain
Weight gain commonly occurs during an individual’s midlife. The average American will gain a pound a year in young adulthood. A person’s midlife is when individuals are most vulnerable to weight gain. It is difficult to achieve weight loss at this time because of a combination of factors.
While hormones are responsible for two to five pounds, most of the weight gain can be attributed to overeating, poor lifestyle choices and stress.
Tracking Weight Loss
The best tool that anyone struggling with weight loss can use to track their weight loss is through body fat. Instead of spending countless hours in front of the scale, the focus should be on decreasing body fat and increasing bone strength. If one would only focus on the scale, the increased bone strength would appear to be weight gain.
During the midlife window when most people experience increased weight gain, a body fat percentage of eighteen to twenty-five percent is acceptable for men, while twenty-two to twenty-seven percent is acceptable for women beyond the age of forty. Another more accurate tool than the scale to track one’s weight loss endeavors is to measure the circumference of a waist. Ideally, men should have a waist below forty inches and below and women’s waists should be thirty-five inches and below.
Weight Loss – Benefits
While there are various vanity reasons to weight loss, there are benefits in all aspects of an individual’s life. Career wise, those that lose weight and know how to keep it off are respected by their peers. Being leaner in the work place demonstrates that your leadership abilities and show that the employee has self-control. Financially, weight loss can keep a person from overspending on the junk food that they are overeating; also, doctor visits are limited because overweight and obese diseases are limited. Exercise gives a person an instant explosion of endorphins that make them feel great. Overall, health improves as well. Weight loss results in less body ache and pain, more restful nights and better breathing.
