Celebrating being in business since 1919, Fairplay Stores has survived and thrived through some of the city’s most challenging times. Many other pet food and feed stores have come and gone over the years- during such hard times such as Great Depression, World War II, the recession of the 1980’s but Fairplay Stores is still in business and going strong.
The original store, opened in the Ross Block at the corner of Memorial Drive and 10th Street N.W., was very different from today’s store. For one thing, the selection of pet food and supplies were limited to Spratts biscuits, kibbled food from the feed mill and Vetzyme brewers yeast tablets. Back then the Hillhurst area was at the edge of the city, so many customers had to drive their teams across the Louise Bridge to pick up their feed. In 1980 the store moved to the Parkdale area after 59 years of being in the same location in Hillhurst. The store now looks out across Kensington Road and Parkdale Blvd to the pathway alongside the Bow River. Fairplay Stores has been known as the pet owners general store, and it is easy to see why, wandering through the store you are immediately struck by the huge selection of supplies and food for pets of every description. Aisles and shelves are well stocked with everything you would need whether your best friend is a dog, cat, small animal or bird. The store is also known for its selection of birdseeds and grains, available in bulk barrels or bags—for both wild and domestic birds. Fairplay has been run by the same family for over 50 years!
