Description
The Canadian Down Syndrome Society is the national organization that advocates on behalf of people with Down syndrome and their families for equality and greater levels of inclusion. The Canadian Down Syndrome Society is a national non-profit organization providing information, advocacy and education about Down syndrome. The CDSS supports self-advocates, parents and families through all stages of life. The Down syndrome community in Canada and the CDSS have made great strides since our founding in 1987. We have seen advances to medical care, which enhance and save the lives of people with Down syndrome; life expectancy has more than doubled. Many people with Down syndrome live well into their 50s and 60s. We have seen the benefits of early intervention programs, inclusion in school and work and the development of accessible resources for people with Down syndrome, families and the community. Today, individuals with Down syndrome are going to post-secondary schools, working and getting married. People with Down syndrome are now given the opportunity to be fully contributing members of society. Despite the great advances made, much more needs to be done. We need to ensure the inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome in their schools, communities and workplaces. Your support will ensure this continues and allow us to speak for the 35,000 Canadians with Down syndrome.
