Description
The Duarte story begins as many stories do, with young dreams and desires. A young Alcino Duarte grew up in Ermida, a small village in Portugal. His father was a door to door salesman and Alcino tried his hand at this trade when he was a teen. He didn’t like knocking on doors, he dreamed of having his own shop where the people would come to him. When he was 16, he came to Montreal.
Meanwhile, Filomena Sousa was growing up on Terceira, a small island in Portugal. Her father died when she was 13 and her mother left in search of a better life for herself and her family. Filomena stayed with her aunt. He mother had travelled to Canada and married a man she met. Filomena and her sister joined their mother in Montreal.
In 1978, Filomena met Alcino at a Portuguese shop in Montreal while buying a magazine. He asked her out for dinner, and three months later they were married.
Together they ran a store in Montreal. When their first son was born, they decided to move out of Quebec and found themselves in Hamilton. (You can read the full story ;here Paul Wilson of the Hamilton Spectator)
They purchased the current store on Barton and Cheever Streets from a family who had run a grocery store on the premises since the 1950’s.
Recently, Duarte has renovated and expanded the store to include a full deli with eat in tables and a beautiful new menu board.
Famous for their Hefty Hoagie, Duarte’s Supermarket is THE place to be when you are hungry.
