Description
32 years experience has taught me much about successful therapy. Being understood is critical; my job is to listen well while bringing you my knowledge about how people work and how change. You bring knowledge of your life and together we have a conversation about what might allow change to happen. Sometimes, old stories get in the way and revisiting them is necessary to remove obstacles to change. This can only happen when people feel safe. Creating that nurturing environment is also part of my job. While therapy can be difficult, it is also an exciting and rewarding process.
My approach integrates trauma, attachment and insight oriented frameworks. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy, mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. My current focus is understanding how our brains work and how knowledge of neuroscience offers possibilities for change. I work within an anti-oppression framework understanding individuals and couples in the context of their power relationships.
I am experienced in working with issues related to emotional regulation, trauma, loss, and chronic illness, to name but a few. For the past 20 years, I have primarily worked with people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans and HIV communities in Toronto, providing individual and couples counselling.
